Hayward Cup

Men’s Squad

The men’s squad used the excellen x12 bus service to travel to Stockton this weekend for the Hayward cup. This was a 4km head race on the river Tees organised by John Snow and Stevenson colleges. It was a nice change to get off the Wear, especially in some lovely rowing conditions in many places. In the morning two senior fours raced, both producing some strong results. The IM4+ Of Fiona Hardyman, Hugh Crawshaw, J-L Wilkinson, Ross Williams and Henry Brown won their category and the novice four of mike Foulks, Dafydd jones, James Winsey, Nate Risser (stepping in from the novice squad) and Alex Bibby came second in their category behind a blistering Trev’s boat. All in all a satisfying morning. In the afternoon the Senior eight raced for the first time in its new form after many changes early on in term. A gutsy row took us to third place behind a very strong Hild Bede 8 and Collingwood, again a decent result. The day was capped off by Cuth’s winning the overall Victor Ludorum ‘Hayward cup’ due to the strong results across the board, podium finishing in every category. From here we are looking forward to rebuilding as a squad with a long break before the head of the river in London, the peak of our season. Back to the grind!

Women’s Squad

The senior women’s squad had a great day at Hayward cup, rowing in lovely surroundings on the River Tees. In the first division the IM8 won their category, putting in a strong performance against the previously unbeaten Hatfield eight. The novice 8 also did extremely well, coming second our of seven crews. Their boat was borrowed from Stevo/John Snow college which we are very grateful for! In the second division the IM4+ of Rosi Jelfs, Jess Wood, Lucy Iball and Tabitha Serle coxed by Michael Webb won their category, storming ahead of their competition. Capped off by winning the Victor Ludorum overall, it was a great day had by all!

Novice Men’s Squad

The Novice men had a positive result too, it was the first head race for many and a great experience to row outside of Durham for the first time. In the first division Elliot Ryan, Tom Casterton, Oli Hutchinson and Tom Titcombe came 7th out of 10 novice fours. Then in the afternoon some of them raced again in the novice eight category. The crew had a great race finishing 3rd, over minute ahead of Hatfield and Grey’s. With a new found competitive spirit the novice squad is eager to train and prepare for the next race.

Novice Women’s Squad

The novice 4+ of Petrina Witt, Zoe Christer, Steph Crossley and Charlotte Duckworth coxed by Alistair Stewart came 4th out of 7, a very positive result for their first race outside of Durham and longer than 2km! All the novice rowers are excited about BCBC Head next Wednesday.
